New GPU

Prices RAM and GPUs are rumoured to exploed in the coming months. My current desktop is still pretty decent, and I plan to keep it for a while longer. I can’t really upgrade the CPU or Motherboard or RAM, because my CPU is the Ryzen 7 5800X, which runs on the now previous-gen AMD4 platform with DDR4 RAM. Upgrading the CPU would mean a new motherboard and DDR5. So a decent stopgap is to upgrade just the GPU before those prices explode too. I upgraded from the Radeon RX 6800 to a Radeon RX 9070 XT.

I thought the 6800 was pretty big, but it’s nothing compared to the 9070 XT!

I even had to remove one of my front case fans for the 9070 to fit! It also has a better media encode/decode engine, which is nice. Here’s to AV1 encoding!

Overall it was a simple upgrade, and I managed to get the 9070 XT below MSRP, so I’m pretty happy. This will be me some time before I do a full new PC build, which likely won’t be until RAM prices drop, whenever that will be.
